You never know what you will discover in Asbury Park. The city is a vibrant, eclectic, unpredictable treasure chest where every corner turned reveals a new unexpected delight. One of those gems is located at the corners of 500 First and Grand Avenues, it’s the Asbury Park Library. A cozy, bustling hub with constant year-round action for the whole community.
Library Director Kathleen Melgar has not only reimagined the library’s programming and services but includes aesthetics to be functional and cozy. Replacing uncomfortable seating with new soft sofas giving the patron a sense of belonging through its warm, curated and comfortable atmosphere.
But before I share more details of the services the library offers to all residents of Asbury Park. Let us take a stroll down memory lane.
James A. Bradley was the founder of Asbury Park, it was his wife Helen M. Bradley, who was instrumental in establishing the Asbury Park Library. In 1878 Helen created and presided over the literary club that eventually led to the creation of the library association. In 1881 James supported his wife’s effort by donating the land for the building.
The mission of the Asbury Park Library is to provide quality, cost-effective services, and lifelong learning opportunities, through books and a variety of other formats, to meet the informational, educational, cultural, and recreational needs and interests of its diverse population.
The Asbury Park Library acquires and organizes materials to provide access to information resources locally and globally. The library also serves as a space for children to discover the joy of reading and to meet the needs of a diverse population. It enables community members to participate in the information revolution through both traditional and technology-based services.

I am having great pleasure writing this article. For several years I was a member of the Asbury Park Library Board of Trustees. Living just a short block away my children were frequent users of the activities that were offered for the children.
The Library Board generally meets on the last Thursday of each month at 5:30pm held at the Asbury Park Library, 500 First Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ. If interested in serving on the board, attend a few meetings and then fill out a volunteer application which is found online on the city website.
