I have been a resident of Asbury Park for over 30 years. I recall the days when parking was never an issue. In the downtown section I recall four operating businesses, Mr. Fashion, Gwen’s Wigs, Newberry, or maybe it was Woolworths, anyway I can’t recall and the other business was the pawn shop.
Every summer there was an abundance of free parking at the beach front. I never had to guard my driveway from those who insisted on blocking it with their parked car or truck with an extended bed. And I certainly didn’t have to pay to park in front of my home.
Fast forward to today Asbury Park is on and popping! Everyone wants to be a part of the Asbury Park Vibe! Publications report that we are one of the best beach towns on the Jersey Shore!
I must admit with all the buzz I’m happy to be a part of the comeback. All this attention has generated more condos and townhomes development, and the need dare I say the demand for Parking!
As a sitting council member, I make every effort to consider the request for parking from the developers and the concerns of the residents who will greatly be impacted by the development.
Parking is a paramount concern and must be managed so that everyone’s concerns are being addressed. Mayor and Council established by resolution a Parking Committee that provides recommendations for parking regulations and management.
In 2011 the city implemented metered parking and parking permits on the East side of the city.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding parking the Parking Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at City Hall at 5:30 pm.
Each meeting begins with an open public comment period. If you are interested in becoming a committee member you can apply online through the City’s Website.
